Climbing Still Scares Me

A few weeks ago I returned to Vedauwoo, WY where I fell in love with climbing. The anticipation of a climbing trip makes me feel like I’m about to rob a bank. My stomach ties in knots and I can’t think about it or else I get too nervous and end up thinking of excuses of why I shouldn’t go.

I still don’t understand why I love this sport. I’m OCD. I’m girly. I like to be clean. I prefer not to have bloody scabs all over my hands during the work week. At least Crossfit hand callouses are easy to hide. But climbing has woven its way in to my heart. I even bought my own gear. It’s official, you guys. We’re totally getting married.

Climbing at Vedauwoo. This is about the time when I have a freak-out-claustrophobia-moment. Thank you, C, for the awesome photo.

Want to watch something that will make you smile? Maybe it’s because I’m married to a cool indie kid, but, I’ve been listening to The National’s new album non-stop lately and reflecting on the crazy roller coaster life has thrown at me lately. The lesson? Dig in to what life throws at you. Don’t run away. Don’t think it’s not you. It IS YOU. You create every step of your life. Take responsibility for your experiences. It feels good to get to the other side of problems. Holy crap, we can do this!! We made it!! Then we’re ready for the next life problem and we get better at the ups and downs. We get better at the ups and downs, don’t we???

But climbing will always scare the shit out of me. This will never change. I just get better at handling the freak-out-anxiety-claustrophobic-moments: “I’m ok. I’m not going to die. Breathe. One moment at a time. Commit. Take risks. The view at the top is worth it”.

Dance and play air guitar. That is always the answer. Life is so worth this beautiful mess.

XO – Joy
